Waterloo Sunset tonight highlighted, for me, the transformative power of the Olympic spirit on perception. A couple of weeks ago I was a jaded, weary Londoner longing to move to the suburbs, the coast, abroad; anywhere away from the millions of people swarming like flies, the dirty river, the taxi lights shining so bright. I felt that lurching feeling when you know your heart has grown cold for someone – and you don’t know what to do. As I drove down the Embankment last night and saw the rainbow lights in blocks on the National Theatre, laser beams on Southwark Bridge, the shard sharp like one of Cruella De Vil’s talons, all dotted with brick red ladybird buses, my love of the city returned. Ray Davies beautiful song marked that moment. A true anthem for London.
